Wednesday was warm and rainy until the evening when it began to rain really hard. I found myself up at midnight trying to siphon about 8 inches of water out of the basement with 3 hoses. Someone years ago made the decision to pipe all the water from the downspouts and basement drains along with an outside drain at the root cellar and another in a low spot on the up side of the house all the way to the creek. The drain pipe goes under the chicken lot and part of the garden and empties in the creek. The problem is that when the creek floods, the water pressure of the creek apparently keeps the drain from emptying just as though it is stopped up. Sooooo.....the basement floods and things start to float around. When the creek level falls, it drains again. I will have to work on this problem so yet another thing on my list of things to do.
The stars were out when I got up at 3 to fire the furnace and at sunrise the colors were really nice. This shot reminds me of a Wolf Kahn painting.
If you squint just right, there are pinks and purple and orange and blues. No I didn't put moonshine in my grits!
I stopped the car on the way to the bus stop to take some of these pastel looking shots.
The Dunker church is in the distance and really got lit up.
Looking the other way I got a neat sunrise.
I like the strip of yellow-green looking back toward the hollow where our house is.
The boys spent the night of hard rain at the top of their pasture, they left the low land for safety.
I was happy to find that the water had gone over my bridge and it held. I use this one to get to firewood so it gets a lot of use. It doesn't look like much but it is well built with 4 long pieces of steel under the decking.
I spent most of the day cleaning up the mess from last night. Not much sleep so I was dragging some today.
Carrie and I are in town tonight as tomorrow is Debbie's birthday and I needed to get stuff to bake her cake. She wanted chocolate on chocolate, guess she craves chocolate.
beautiful photos! Wow, incredible shots, the boys are smart aren't they, happy birthday to Debbie, I like how she rolls, chocolate on chocolate, yes!
ReplyDeleteThanks, sometimes things just light up nice, must be all the moisture in the air. Can't go too far wrong with chocolate.
DeleteBeautiful Pictures...sorry about the water in your basement. Your property is so pretty and I love the quaintness of your little bridge! Chocolate cake sounds pretty delish with some vanilla bean ice cream! Enjoy! Have a wonderful and blessed weekend! Roxie
ReplyDeleteThanks, I baked the cake this morning and will put it on today's blog if I remembered the photo.
DeleteHappy birthday Debbie! Love the shots of the Dunkard church - so pretty. Your bridge looks great. So sorry about the basement. We really did get some crazy rain. Our driveway has a little river going through it now.
ReplyDeleteI spent a long time a couple summers ago rebuilding the drive by hand since it cost too much to bring equipment in. Got free used rock and asphalt in roanoke and dug ditches and crowned the road so that the water runs off into the ditch. If your drive is steep you may want to throw the water to the sides.
DeleteEnjoyed your post as always, Sunnybrook. Lovely photos. And thanks for something new to look up and learn: Who are the Dunkers? Checking on it now. :O)
ReplyDeleteThey are the old order german baptist or brethern. They dress like amish kind of but have all kinds of equipment including automatic garage door openers and cell phones but the internet and tv are evil.
DeleteI think that the internet and tv are evil sometimes, too. But they are soooo funnnn other times. Guess I'll just have to stick with the religion I have. Lol!
Deletehappy birthday to debbie! my boys' birthday is tomorrow! my groundhog babies :D beautiful photos...lol'ing at moonshine in your grits! did you get any snow? we got a dusting, enough to close schools...it's icy out there, and COLD!
ReplyDeleteJust as dusting but the cold wind was nasty enough to close schools I guess. My wife was going to be a ground hog but she stuck her head out a day early I guess, don't know if they had six more weeks of winter that year, hmmmm!
Deletebummer about your basement! the photos are gorgeous though!
ReplyDeleteThe basement is back to normal and the washer stared up so I guess the motor didn't get wet.
DeleteYour pictures are always soo pretty! Hmmm moonshine on your grits what a way to start your day LOL!!!! Happy Birthday to Debbie, how sweet of you to make her a cake!
ReplyDeleteI have a boston butt in the oven slow cooking so we will have my version of barbecue for her birthday supper.
