A little color this morning for a minute or two.
Warm today so I was out working on a sawbuck this morning. I was going to make a more elaborated version out of lumber but noticed a piece of shipping crate in my junk wood pile and it looked kind of like a sawbuck so I started making the X part on the top to hold the logs.
It is light enough for me to carry around so I took it to the front yard and sawed up limbs that I had trimmed awhile back. I used hand saws but of course it is good for a chain saw and will keep the blade out of the ground. Ended up with a little over 2 wheelbarrow loads.
This afternoon was Carrie's first shooting lesson and she must have listened to the lecture part as she was putting shots in the red center of the target most of the time. I gave her my grandfather's 22 for christmas and a box of bullets. When I was little, my grandfather used to shoot at ground hogs with it and had me stand in front of him and used my head to steady the gun on, guess I was just the right height for him. It is a single shot and still shoots pretty good groups.
How old is your daughter? We were wondering what a good age would be to give our granddaughter her first 22? She's still young (only 8) but has a BB gun and a real bow. We taught our kids young too but they used our guns, of course with us supervising--so they would have respect for guns without all the curiosity that kids have when they are not allowed around them. We made sure they saw hunting so they understood the consequences of pulling the trigger when it was pointed at something. We want the same for our granddaughter.
ReplyDeleteKathy: We started our two boys off at 5 and 6. And purchased the single shot Crickett .22 for kids. It makes the perfect first rifle. And they come in pink for girls. there are over 5 different saftey features as well. And you can also purchase lots of accessories for them.

Thanks for both the question, Kathy, and the answer, Jacked Up Glock Mom. We've had a BB rifle but been hesitant to go to something higher because of not having been raised around guns and being a bit leery. I like the thought of all the different safety features.
DeleteShe is 14 and has been is scouts for years and band so she has demonstrated the ability to follow directions and make good decisions so I didn't see any reason that she shouldn't learn as she seemed interested in it. I read one time that Daniel Boone didn't get a rifle of his own until 12. Target shooting is good for self discipline and it is a real mental workout with breathing and relaxing.
Deletehahaha...i like the story about your grandfather. i got my first .22 when i was 5. i think learning to be a good shot at a young age is very important.
ReplyDeleteI think I was about 10 when I got a bb gun and was allowed to use the single shot 22 that carrie has now.
DeleteCarrie looks nice and comfortable shooting. And seems like a good shot! I hope she liked it.
ReplyDeleteShe liked it especially when she shot better than her mother.
