Wednesday 12/26

Walked around in the garden on Sunday and still have greens growing. The ground cover which is a weed that comes up every fall is shepards purse (I think) and is totally useless to me other than to keep the soil from washing so I tolerate it as it goes to seed and dies in early spring. When you walk on it there is kind of a garlic smell, it seems to give the greens some cover. The plant in the center is a mustard green.
The kale is my favorite as far as taste goes.
Opened up some of my peppers and tomatoes to make a pot of chili, not exactly a christmas meal but I like it on a cold day. Made corn muffins to go with it.
Foggy and rainy on christmas eve, didn't get a lot done other than bring in wood and take care of the animals. Aggy smelled some more good scents on the trail, probably a squirrel, she has astered treeing them.
Christmas morning finally arrived, I got some new gloves, no more cold hands in the morning! Nice quiet day at home this year.
This morning it was cold with freezing rain or sleet or snow, depending on when you looked. the boys were ready for their hay.
It didn't amount to much, just made doing things a little harder.
I put out some more hay at lunch and Dusty got a little bit as he was giving me the sad horse look. It usually works.
We finally got out to DQ for some internet this afternoon. The sun actually came out for awhile but then it clouded over and is cold again.

  1. We didn't have the predicted white Christmas, just the seriously cold temps. Keeping all the critters waters unfrozen is alot of work!!! I was lucky last year with our mild winter and I didn't have this many animals!!!! It doesn't help that almost everyone in my house is sick :p including me. Some have a stomach bug others have colds, I'm sure we will all switch our sickness's in a few days and those with colds will have the stomach bug and the others will have colds. Glad your Christmas went well ☺

    1. We are doing good so far, I felt like I was fighting off something last week for a few days but nothing came of it. My germs probably kill invading germs as with animals you have to work in such a germ rich environment. My chickens rush over to eat the pieces of ice when I beak the water, how silly is that in below freezing temperatures?

We're supposed to get some weather tonight...we'll see if it actually does come in the amounts they are calling for!

    1. If chicken brains were a delicacy, it would take several hundred birds to get a cup full, they aren't rocket scientists for sure.

  5. We dodged the bullet so kids, critters and roads are all great; however, my mom is stuck since MO/ARK roads are bad and more freezing rain ahead. I'm not sure how long she will be here, completely bored I am sure. She is not a rural person but enjoys theater, restaurants, musicals, plays, etc. The chickens are just not doing it for her.

    1. She doesn't like the chicken improv they can be hilarious but you have to have the right sense of humor I guess.

  6. Your kale looks good, although I've never been a huge fan but my wife loves it. I'd love to learn canning but it's just not done very much in this country.

    1. You could start lacto fermentation as the equipment is not as important as in vacuum sealed canning. You just rely on cool storage and a cold room could be made in your climate for that kind of thing.
